Rolls

Two rolls, ten stills · how the album was made

Droproll Lab · 10 Sept 2026

Ten pictures composed out of two developed rolls and the site's own type and colour. What each still is doing, and which frame is inside it.

The album is ten pictures, made to be read in order. They are stills rather than frames: pictures the lab composed, out of photographs the public can already see and out of this site's own type and colour. Nothing in them was generated, and nothing in them is a capture of a screen. Every photograph is a real developed frame off a real roll, and every line of type is a line the site already says somewhere.

A paper coloured slide. The wordmark DROPROLL sits at the top left, then SHOOT NOW. SEE LATER. in large serif capitals. A tall frame stands in the right hand column, holding the picture of a person in a red leather jacket against a deep blue wall. A line of mono type at the foot reads 36 FRAMES, NO PREVIEWS, 21 FILM LOOKS.

Why it looks like this

The camera decided the layout before we did. Thirty six frames to a roll. No previews while the roll is open, and no way to delete a frame you did not like. You finish it, you send it to the lab, and you wait. The free Standard lab takes three to five days, and the paid Express lab is the way to skip that.

So the album is made of the things a person actually sees here: a counter, a film strip, a canister, a colour room, the shelf. The labels under the pictures are the real frame numbers off the real rolls, not decoration.

Ink black, with no photograph in it. NO PEEKING. in large serif capitals, a counter reading 36 / 36 in the top right corner, a rule under the words, and 36 FRAMES, NO PREVIEWS in small mono type at the foot.

The second slide is the rule on its own. A counter at 36 of 36 in the corner, and nothing to look at.

A photograph filling the slide, with a black film strip lying across the top and the bottom and sprocket holes punched through it so the picture shows in them. Overhead on grass, someone in a red and white striped shirt lying with their arms out and a paper strip across their eyes. The label MIRA 400 · 10 / 15 is printed on the strip itself.

Then the first photograph, held inside the lab's own film strip, with the holes punched right through so the grass shows in them.

Mira 400's own colour room, a soft pink. A portrait stands in it, a red leather jacket against a deep blue wall with a small black and white photo card held up beside the face. A Mira 400 canister sits in the bottom right corner and DEVELOPED ON MIRA 400 is set under it in serif capitals.

The fourth is Mira 400 standing in its own colour. The films on the home page shelf each stand in a colour like that, and this is Mira's, with a frame from the roll in it.

A photograph filling the slide inside a thin paper coloured line, the way a print sits inside its border. A rain puddle on a wet street reflects a cream and orange house and a warm sky, with a man's legs walking past along the top edge. AURRA 200 · 05 / 08 is in mono type at the foot.

The fifth is the other roll and the other kind of picture. Nobody in it, a puddle doing the work. The thin line around the edge is a print border.

Ink black, with YOU WAIT, THEN YOU SEE. across the top in serif capitals. Two pictures from the same roll sit side by side under it. On the left, someone crouching on a red gingham cloth, unrolling a long strip of photo booth prints. On the right, someone holding a printed sheet of small portraits up across their face in front of a wooden sideboard and a trailing plant. Each has its own mono label under it.

Two frames from the same roll, side by side. That is the closest a still gets to what a developed roll actually feels like: not one picture, a set that arrives all at once.

Aurra 200's colour room, an amber yellow, with the picture on the right this time. A blue plastic crate sits on a concrete sea wall, with calm water and a pale sky behind it. The Aurra 200 canister and the line DEVELOPED ON AURRA 200 are on the left.

Aurra 200's room, laid out as the mirror of the Mira slide so the two read as a pair rather than a repeat.

A photograph filling the slide, a small fishing boat crossing flat water at sunset under a sky that runs from orange to yellow. ONE ROLL AT A TIME. is set over the lower half in paper white serif capitals, with a faint ink gradient behind the letters so they stay readable on the water. AURRA 200 · 08 / 08 sits at the foot.

Then the line the whole thing turns on, over the last frame of the lab's roll. One roll at a time is not a slogan. The lab develops one roll at a time, which is why there is a queue and why the standard lane takes days.

The shelf, on ink black, with no photograph in it. THE SHELF · 21 FILM LOOKS in mono type at the top, then three film canisters standing in their own colour rooms, Aurra 200 in amber, Mira 400 in pink and Verdi 400 in green. A smaller row of eight canisters runs under them, and 21 FILM LOOKS. closes the slide in large serif capitals.

The shelf: twenty one film looks, three of them standing in their own colour rooms and the rest in miniature.

The last slide, with no photograph in it. A red block across the top half carries LOAD A FILM. in paper white serif capitals. The bottom half is paper, with DROPROLL.APP, then A FILM CAMERA IN YOUR POCKET in mono type, and the credit for the frames in small mono capitals at the foot.

And the last slide, which gives the address and stops.

The two rolls

Every photograph in the set comes off one of two public rolls, and both are open to read.

The first is KAIDOLAB's roll, fifteen frames on Mira 400. It is the one with the red jacket, the photo strips and the paper. A set of pictures about getting pictures back.

The second is the lab's own sample roll, eight frames on Aurra 200. Streets, water, a crate on a sea wall. It was shot so that a stock page would have something to show.

A rain puddle on a village street holding the reflection of a cream and orange house and a warm evening sky, with a man walking past along the top of the frame.

Who is in them

KAIDOLAB's presenter is an AI presenter. We say so on the roll, in the credit under every picture here, and on the last slide of the album itself. The frames are real frames, developed in this lab like anybody else's. The person standing in them is not a real person.

The other roll is the lab's own, which is why it is credited to Droproll Lab and to nobody else.

What we did not do

No stock photography. No AI images anywhere in the graphics. No screenshots of the site. Everything that is not a photograph, which is the type, the film strip, the canisters, the colour rooms and the shelf, was drawn as a web page and rendered to a picture at the size this page needs.

The same ten are on Instagram, in this order, on Portjolio's account.
